Sloped Backyard Transformation & Pond Installation in Auburn
Set against a naturally wooded backdrop, this Auburn property required more than landscaping — it required thoughtful land shaping, water management, and a seamless integration of architecture and nature.
The homeowners envisioned a refined outdoor environment that felt established, intentional, and deeply connected to the natural surroundings. Our team delivered a comprehensive landscape transformation that addressed drainage, elevation changes, hardscape structure, and layered planting — all while preserving the beauty of the existing terrain.
Structural Foundation & Land Shaping
Before planting began, we reshaped and stabilized the property to ensure long-term performance and usability.
A custom brown ledgestone retaining wall was installed to create a more functional slope between the upper steps and lower terrace. Beneath the surface, a strategic drainage system with solid PVC piping, inlet boxes, and dry creek outlets was implemented to manage water flow across the property and protect the home’s foundation.
Extensive grading and topsoil installation prepared the site for optimal plant health and proper slope integration — particularly around the new driveway and courtyard.
Signature Water & Stone Features
A defining feature of this landscape is the expansive river rock dry creek bed, composed of varying stone sizes including brown ledgestone, river boulders, and creek mix. Beyond its visual impact, the feature serves as a functional drainage solution that blends beautifully into the natural setting.
The custom waterfall and pond system anchor the backyard, cascading from a large boulder into a lined pond below. The layered stonework creates movement, sound, and a sense of retreat — transforming the outdoor space into a peaceful extension of the home.
Large boulders were strategically placed throughout the front and rear landscape to provide scale, permanence, and architectural balance.
Layered Planting Design
With over 350 individual plant installations, the planting plan was curated to provide year-round structure, texture, and seasonal color.
Highlights include:
- Hydrangea varieties for layered bloom cycles
- Distylium, Loropetalum, and evergreen shrubs for foundational structure
- River Birch, Sweet Bay Magnolia, Japanese Maples, and Autumn Blaze Maples for canopy and seasonal interest
- Pink Muhly Grass, Morning Light Grass, and perennials for movement and softness
- Emerald Zoysia sod to frame the driveway with a lush, manicured finish
Existing natural areas were selectively cleaned and preserved to maintain the wooded character of the property while enhancing visibility and overall cohesion.
Smart Irrigation & Finishing Details
A 14-zone irrigation system with a Rachio smart controller ensures efficient, targeted watering across the entire landscape. Pine straw mulch was installed throughout planting beds to provide a clean, cohesive finish.

From structural stonework and drainage to lush planting and water features, every element works together to create a timeless outdoor environment designed for both performance and enjoyment.
