Five must haves for lake landscaping, a blog post by R&R Landscaping.

At R&R Landscaping, we pride ourselves on thoughtful design. This just means that we try to get in our client’s head and think about how you will use your space. Making things beautiful is easy, we want to make things beautiful AND function well for you, your family, and anyone enjoying the space with you.

Lake life presents some unique opportunities to consider. Here’s my list of the top 5 things to think about as you plan your outdoor spaces at the lake:

1. Wind – YOWZA! Who knew how much wind comes off that lake? Lake people, that’s who. I think about wind from a couple of different perspectives. In the winter, the wind can be brutal on your tender plants. So, if you have a plant that’s already at the north end of its horticultural zone, those winds are going to be the difference maker and you’ll see freeze burns or even death on these plants. Variegated Pittosporum, for example, shouldn’t be planted waterfront.

The other thing to think about is how many beautiful days we have at the lake that are just too windy to do much outside. I know everyone wants a wide-open view, but creating some windbreaks here and there gives us more options to enjoy the outdoors and be one with the wind! My favorite hot tub area is tucked in among some privacy shrubs with peek-a-boo views of the lake protected from the wind.

2. Accessibility – Lake life often means hosting a crowd. From babies to the elderly, we want to be able to enjoy living outdoors and not be worried about the safety of our family or guests. We also want to be sure we are thinking about how many cars that means we have to park sometimes!

Some lots make this difficult, but handrails for people who struggle with stairs help, making sure you are clear on your lines of sight to the water, creating little splash areas for the littles, and incorporating plenty of places to stop and sit are just a few ways we think about accommodating the revolving door of people!

3. Play – Regardless of age, play just makes everything more fun. It also gives us something to focus on in case the conversation has turned to politics! Maybe it’s because my husband is basically a child, but I’m always thinking through ways to incorporate play in a beautiful way. Large, oversized swings, outdoor ping pong, bocce call, sensory gardens, yard games, boulders to climb on, and so much more can be incorporated to bring people together for a little fun in the sun!

4. Pool – I know, I know. You live at the lake, why do you need a pool? Well, if you live on big water, you have an amazing view, but you may not have a safe place to swim and it’s HOT out there! Also, some people refuse to get into the lake water. While I don’t understand this, it’s the truth. And, if it’s you, then you probably want a pool!

5. Shade AND Sun – It’s important to create spaces of shade and sun if you can. Some people love soaking up the sun and some people despise it. My family seems to have the two extremes and nothing in between. I love that we have some mature trees and covered areas, while also having plenty of sunny spots for those that want to soak up those rays.

Lake life is all about making memories and spending quality time with the people we love the most. It’s truly an honor to work alongside our lake community to continue improving the spaces with live, work, and play in!
