An Auburn Landscape Designed to Last

Every landscape holds traces of the people who shaped it.

At this Auburn home, the influence of the original owner was immediately apparent. A horticulture professor by trade, his passion for plants could still be seen in the mature trees, established gardens, and thoughtful planting throughout the property.

The new homeowners saw more than an established landscape – they saw a legacy worth carrying forward. Their goal was to preserve the property’s character while creating an outdoor space their family could enjoy for years to come.

Preserving the Character

Some of the most important design decisions happen before anything new is ever installed.

As we walked the property together, we found mature trees and landscape features that still gave the home its character. Many of the shrubs had reached the end of their lifespan. Rather than trying to preserve plants that were in decline, we focused on protecting the pieces that would continue to anchor the landscape for years to come.

Those choices allowed the landscape’s history to remain at the heart of the new design.

Designing for the Way They Live

The goal was never to compete with the landscape’s history. It was to create an outdoor space that felt like a natural continuation of it.

Just outside the home, large sandstone pavers form a spacious patio designed for gathering with friends and family. Synthetic turf joints soften the stonework, adding texture and giving the hardscape a relaxed, garden-like feel.

From there, your eye is naturally drawn to the bubbling fountain at the center of the design. Positioned to be perfectly framed by the large window in the sitting room, it becomes a focal point both indoors and out.

Beyond the patio, the landscape opens into a generous lawn with plenty of room for their grandson to run and play, while creating flexible space for family and friends to enjoy for years to come.

Every planting choice was made with intention. We selected a diverse palette of plants that offers beauty in every season. The gardens honor the property’s past while creating something this family could truly make their own.

Landscapes Continue to Grow

One of our favorite parts of a project comes after the installation is complete.

We’ve had the privilege of continuing to care for this landscape as it matures alongside the family who now calls it home.

Watching new plants settle in beneath mature trees, seeing the patio become a gathering place, and knowing the gardens will continue evolving for years to come reminds us that great landscapes are never truly finished.
